ABSTRACT

The research about the preparation of the catalyst chitosan derivative N-methyl chitosan and N-isopropyl chitosan has been done as a heterogeneous base catalyst in transesterification process of waste cooking oil. Preparation of the catalyst N-methyl chitosan made by reacting formaldehyde and chitosan is accompanied by reduction using NaBH4. Preparation of the catalyst N-isopropyl chitosan is done by reacting acetone and chitosan is accompanied by reduction using NaBH4. Waste cooking oil is filtered using a variety of adsorbent, namely activacted carbon, powder carbon, bentonit, and kaolin. The most optimal filtering result using activated carbon. Transesterification process using waste cooking oil mole ratio methanol and waste cooking oil is 1:12 with assumption that the used waste cooking oil is dominated by the POO. The mixture refluxed at temperature of 60oC with constant stirring maintained for 2 hours. Resulting methyl ester were analyzed using GC-MS. The result showed that the yield of methyl ester result of the use chitosan is 2%, N-methyl chitosan is 3,1%, and N-isopropyl chitosan is 8,6%.
