YOGYAKARTA – Sebagian besar masyarakat Indonesia belum mengenal ilmu kimia dengan baik. "Ilmu kimia dianggap ilmu yang sulit, abstrak, berhubungan dengan bahan kimia yang beracun, tidak dapat langsung diaplikasikan, dan lapangan pekerjaannya terbatas," kata dosen program studi Ilmu Kimia Fakultas MIPA Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) Yogyakarta Dr. Noor Fitri, S.Si., MSi.
Pemahaman itu, menurut dia, berdampak pada rendahnya minat calon mahasiswa untuk mendalami ilmu kimia. "Pemahaman tersebut tentu saja keliru, sehingga diperlukan usaha untuk meluruskan dan menunjukkan peran ilmu kimia dalam kehidupan kepada masyarakat," tuturnya.
Ia mengatakan, ilmu kimia berperan besar terhadap kesejahteraan umat manusia. Hampir semua produk industri untuk keperluan hidup sehari-hari umat manusia menggunakan bahan kimia dalam proses produksi. "Sepatu, tas, pakaian, barang elektronik, peralatan rumah tangga, komputer, telepon genggam, serta perlengkapan mandi dan mencuci, semuanya menggunakan bahan kimia dalam proses pembuatannya," katanya.
Menurut dia, hampir tidak ada barang keperluan sehari-hari yang dikonsumsi tanpa peranan bahan kimia dalam pengolahannya. "Semakin banyak barang yang kita gunakan, semakin banyak bahan kimia yang terlibat dalam proses pembuatannya," ujarnya.
Ia mengatakan, peran ilmu kimia dalam bidang lingkungan hidup sangat besar. Isu pemanasan global, pencemaran udara, air dan tanah telah memicu pengembangan green chemistry yang berorientasi pada proses dan penggunaan bahan yang ramah lingkungan. "Konsep pengelolaan lingkungan telah bergeser dari perlindungan lingkungan terhadap limbah menjadi usaha rekayasa proses produksi yang tidak menghasilkan limbah," katanya.
Di masa datang, menurut dia, selayaknya industri penjamin kemandirian bangsa adalah industri nasional berbasis riset yang menggunakan bahan baku lokal disertai dengan sistem manajemen sumber daya alam yang baik dan teknologi nasional hasil karya anak bangsa. "Pencapaian tujuan tersebut dapat terlaksana dengan mengarahkan kegiatan riset kimia pada pengembangan industri berbasis sumber daya alam lokal," katanya.

 Keberhasilan sebuah institusi yang menghasilkan lulusannya adalah sejauh mana lulusannya dapat mengamalkan ilmu dalam bidangnya di masyarakat. Hal ini adalah salah satu tujuan pembelajaran, agar anak didiknya dapat berguna serta bermanfaat dalam menyumbangkan keahliannya sesuai dengan bidangnya. Secara umum penyelenggaraan perguruan tinggi di Indonesia bertujuan untuk menyiapkan sumber daya manusia yang secara professional dapat menerapkan dan mengembangkan bidang keahliannya serta mampu menyebarluaskan dan mengupayakan penggunaan keahliannya untuk meningkatkan taraf hidup masyarakat dan kebudayaan nasional. Untuk mampu manilai sejauh mana lulusan Prodi Ilmu Kimia FMIPA-UII dapat bermanfaat bagi masyarakat, maka perlu dilakukan studi pelacakan (tracer study). Studi pelacakan mencakup antara lain di mana lulusan berada pada saat ini. Di bidang apa lulusan bekerja, sejauh mana lulusan dirasakan bermanfaat oleh para pengguna (stakeholder), apakah bekal/ kemampuan lulusan sesuai dengan kebutuhan masyarakat, apakah ada kekurangan selama lulusan mengabdikan ilmunya, berapa lama lulusan menunggu sampai memperoleh pekerjaan dan berapa pendapatan/gaji awal bekerja.
Selain itu, studi pelacakan dapat digunakan sebagai umpan balik (feed back) bagi Prodi Ilmu Kimia untuk mengevaluasi dan memperbaiki kurikulum, agar lulusan dapat mengantisifasi kebutuhan/tuntutan masyarakat. Tanpa mengenali apa kebutuhan masyarakat maka Prodi Ilmu Kimia telah gagal dalam meluluskan anak didiknya. Studi pelacakan juga menjadi salah satu penilaian yang penting dalam penilaian akreditasi program studi yang dilakukan oleh Badan Akreditasi Nasional Perguruan Tinggi (BAN-PT). Penilaian ini dapat menjadi benchmark bagi akuntabilitas, keredibilitas, maupun up date sebuah program studi. Kegiatan studi pelacakan (tracer study) ini dapat dilakukan dengan Kegiatan Temu Alumni. Bersama ini kami sampaikan rencana Temu Alumni Akbar Ilmu Kimia-MIPA (Seluruh Angkatan) Universitas Islam Indonesia 2015. Kami mohon masukan dari semua alumni untuk pelaksanaannya.

ABSTRAK

Telah dilakukan penelitian untuk menguji kualitas dan komposisi kimia minyak nilam (Pogostemon cablin benth) yang telah disimpan selama tiga bulan. Minyak nilam yang dimaksud diperoleh sebelumnya dari proses distilasi uap dengan menggunakan variasi pH air penyuling yaitu pH 7, 9, 10 dan 12. Metode yang dilakukan adalah dengan menganalisis sifat fisika sampel yaitu berat jenis, indeks bias dan sifat kimia yaitu bilangan asam, bilangan ester, Fe serta komponen kimianya dengan GC-MS. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sifat fisika minyak nilam setelah penyimpanan tiga bulan tidak mengalami perubahan untuk setiap variasi pH air penyuling. Sementara hasil uji sifat kimia terhadap angka asam untuk pH 7, 9, 10 dan 12 adalah 0,00460; 0,00488; 0,00354 dan 0,01160; angka ester: 0,01027; 0,00736; 0,00672 dan 0,01376; dan kandungan Fe: 4,6389 mg/L; 4,0806 mg/L; 3,1374 mg/L dan 6,4271 mg/L. Analisis komposisi kimia menunjukkan adanya senyawa-senyawa yang sama pada setiap variasi pH air penyuling sebelum dan setelah penyimpanan minyak nilam yaitu: trans-karyofilena, α-patchoulena, α-guaiena, δ-guaiena, β-elemena, seycellena, patchoulena dan β-karyofilena. Namun secara kuantitatif mengalami perubahan. Sementara itu senyawa utama minyak nilam yaitu patchouli alcohol tidak dijumpai.

ABSTRACT

Research has been conducted to test the quality and chemical compositions of patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth) that had been stored for three months. Patchouli oil is obtained from steam distillation process by using a variations of pH of the distilled water at pH 7, 9, 10 and 12. The method has been done by analyzing the physical properties of the sample is density, refractive index and chemical properties is acid number, ester number, Fe and chemical components by GC-MS. The results showed that the physical properties of patchouli oil after three months of storage did not change on each variations of pH of the distilled water. The test results of the chemical properties of the acid number to pH 7, 9, 10 and 12 are 0.00460; 0.00488; 0.00354 and 0.01160; ester number: 0.01027; 0.00736; 0,00672 and 0,01376 and Fe content: 4,6389 mg/L; 4,0806 mg/L; 3,1374 mg/L and 6,4271 mg/L. Analysis of chemical components showed the same compounds at each variation of pH of the distilled water before and after storage of patchouli oil are: trans-caryophyllene, α-patchoulene, α-guaiene, δ-guaiene, β-elemene, seycellene, patchoulene and β-caryophyllene. However, quantitative changes. The main compound of patchouli oil is patchouli alcohol was not found.

Telah dilakukan penelitian tentang isomerisasi 3-carene menjadi 4-carene menggunakan katalis natrium-o-klorotoluena dengan perlakuan yang berbeda dari perlakuan sebelumnya yaitu dilakukan pembuatan katalis natrium-o-klorotoluena dan direfluks pada temperatur 250 oC selama 12 jam. Selanjutnya ditambahkan 3-carene dan di refluks kembali pada temperatur 170 oC selama 4 jam.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa menggunakan perlakuan yang berbeda (katalis dan reaktan tidak dicampur) dari perlakuan sebelumnya (katalis dan reaktan dicampur) tidak dapat terbentuk katalis natrium-o-klorotoulena terhadap isomerisasi 3-carene menjadi 4-carene. Hal ini disebabkan karena tidak terbentuknya katalis natrium-o-klorotoluena dan proses isomerisasinya tidak bereaksi sempurna sehingga tidak diperoleh senyawa 4-carene melainkan diperoleh senyawa 3-carene, β-pinene dan pelarut.

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to determine the harmful compounds in perfumes by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Perfume samples (A, B, C) obtained from the supermarket and the refill perfume fragrance that is almost the same. Methodology is the determination of specific gravity and refractive index. Chemical analysis performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Based on the results obtained three samples of data that have perfume composition profiles of the same constituent that is solvent, fixative agents, and perfuming agents. Compounds that are solvent are methanol, ethanol. Compounds that are fixative agent is 1,2-Butanediol, 3-ethoxy-1-propanol, limonene, dipropylene glycol, 2-(2-hydroxypropoxy)-1-propanol, 3,3’-oxybis-2-butanol. The compound is a substance which is dihydrojasmonat methyl fragrance, alpha-hexyl cinnamaldehyde. Dihydrojasmonat methyl is a compound that becomes the deciding factor perfume that smells like jasmine.

Telah dilakukan pemekatan sitronelal dalam minyak sereh wangi (Cymbopogon Nardus L.) dengan fraksinasi distilasi dan identifikasi menggunakan kromatografi gas-spektrometri massa.
Dalam penelitian ini digunakan metode fraksinasi distilasi menggunakan minyak sereh wangi sebagai sampel dengan volume 250 ml, dan difraksinasi melalui tiga tahapan fraksinasi selama 2 jam pada tekanan 3 mmHg. Produk yang dihasilkan dianalisis menggunakan KG-SM. Hasil analisis KG-SM menunjukkan adanya senyawa sitronelal terbesar dihasilkan pada fraksi ke-1 yaitu sebesar 25,38 % dengan temperatur fraksinasi sebesar 48-55.5°C diperoleh minyak sebanyak 76 mL, indeks bias 1,4450, putaran optik (-1°), bobot jenis 0,857 gr/mL.
